Ruud Meijer - Coup de Foudre!

Book design, art direction and campaign

In Coup de Foudre! writer and music journalist Ruud Meijer explores his lifelong love affair with music — from Hildegard von Bingen to Olivier Messiaen, from Bach to Stravinsky, with surprising detours to Frank Zappa and Steely Dan. Blending elements of column, essay, memoir, and short story, he offers more than forty playful yet deeply insightful reflections on composers, performers, and their masterpieces.

The design of this limited first edition is entirely shaped by its content — a book that breathes music. Typography, paper choice, and rhythmical structure follow the tone of Meijer’s writing, alternating between stillness and intensity. The first edition was produced as a numbered, signed collector’s item, available exclusively to early buyers.

To support the release, we developed a series of print and online advertisements that highlight the elegance and restraint of the design. The iconic photograph by Andreas Terlaak and the clear, inviting line — “The beloved stories from Luister, finally collected. Pre-order your signed copy now.” — formed the visual and emotional core of the campaign.
