Stellung Hase
Commissioned by the municipality of Harderwijk, we developed the concept and design for Stellung Hase together with architect Victor Schölvinck of CEL Studio. The monument stands on the original concrete base of a German radar installation — part of a network that once spanned the Netherlands during World War II.
Our concept transforms the idea of a radar into a “radar of stories.” Instead of detecting aircraft, it now reflects the human stories of that time. The flower-shaped structure refers both to the natural garden in which it stands and to the form of the radar dish once mounted there.
Each petal carries fragments from a wartime diary kept by a Harderwijk police officer — a diary once given to me by my grandfather. His words, etched into the monument in a custom-designed typeface, give voice to the everyday life and moral choices of a city at war.
Encircling the sculpture is a pattern echoing the former radar network across the Netherlands — all codenamed after animals, including Stellung Hase (“Position Hare”).
